Chedworth Roman Villa, near Cirencester, Cotswolds

• remains of a Romano-Brtish villa
• built between AD 180 and AD 350, it had 32 rooms
• run by National Trust
• first excavated in 1864, and on and off since
• lovely woodland valley setting
• surviving mosaics and bath complexes show the level of civilisation achieved at this time
• museum on the site
• open March to end November
• 3 miles NW of Fossebridge on Cirencester to Northleach road (A429)
