Westonbirt Arboretum, near Tetbury, Cotswolds

Westonbirt is not a large village, more a hamlet. Its fame is due to

• A girls Public School, which uses a building that dates from the 19th century, and was originally owned by the Holford family
• The Arboretum now owned by the Forestry Commission, but originally planted by the Holfords who started the plantings in 1829 and the family continued work on it until it was sold to the Forestry Commission in 1956

The Arboretum covers 600 acres, and has over 18,000 trees. It is one of the best collections of trees and shrubs in the world. Of particular note are the magnolias, rhododendrons and azaleas. Silk Wood has been extensively restored and has a spectacular showing of wild flowers in spring

There is a visitor centre and the arboretum is open all year

It is near Malmesbury in Wiltshire just north of the A433
